From the BOCC

We are proud to share highlights from the past year at Summit County Government. As ever, we are constantly striving to provide programs and services that support the affordability, sustainability, and livability of our diverse community.

In 2023, we heard from so many of you who are facing higher property tax bills, on top of rising interest rates, insurance, and the cost of living and doing business in the County. And our County operations have not been immune to those same forces that put pressure on our ability to provide the services you depend on.

The budget process was challenging—trying to find the right balance between funding the services that our citizens depend on while recognizing the realities high cost of living in a rural resort community. This year, we are working with our partners in the state legislature to give counties more authority to meaningfully reduce property taxes for our communities.

While this annual report showcases some of Summit County’s larger accomplishments from 2023, there were dozens of other notable projects, including new recycling facilities at the Summit County Resource Allocation Park, over $250,000 in grants awarded to our Sustainability Department, dozens of families served by Mountain Mentors program, launching a Comprehensive Plan update, and so much more.

Of course, none of it would happen without our dedicated staff who work to serve our community every single day - our bus operators, our library technicians, our public health nurses, our building inspectors.

As we look forward to 2024, there are many exciting things on the horizon. Summit County Government’s leadership continues to work to optimize efficiency and efficacy in our operations to make the highest impacts with our resources, as well as prioritize opportunities for collaborations and grant funding that positively leverage our local dollars.

We are committed to our taxpayers, to the individuals and families we serve, and our entire community, and are honored to serve you.

Sincerely,

Eric, Tamara, and Nina
